Twitter plans to explore new models to increase revenue, including a subscription service.
In a Bloomberg report, various possibilities including tipping Tweets, customizing the paid profile, and a Tweetdeck subscription service are considered.
Twitter and Tweetdeck are currently free for those who use it with no premium add-ons except sponsored posts. The free nature of the app is very much in line with all other social media models which rely on their ability to draw eyes to advertising rather than having users pay themselves.
Twitter has been looking for new sources of revenue for some time, even asking users in a survey what they would be willing to pay if additional services were placed on top of the free model.
More details on when and in which regions these tests will be deployed have not been released. However, it is unlikely to start in South Africa. With previous upgrades, South Africa was only included in the global rollout rather than beta testing.
