Windows 10’s taskbar, which runs along the bottom of the desktop, is about to undergo a big change soon, with a new “ News & Interest ” section that displays news headlines, weather forecasts, and more. when you click on it.
While Microsoft wants this new feature to allow users to access information faster, as Windows Latest points out oUtah, it might slow down your PC.
This is based on an early version of the News & Interest tool that appeared in an Insider version of Windows 10. This is a version of Windows 10 sent to testers (known as Windows Insiders) to try. features that could enter the future.
Memory pig
According to Windows Latest, the new feature checks background news feeds to give you the latest information. This means that a process is running in the background and when searching for news it can take up to 150MB of RAM.
That’s a good amount of memory, especially on older PCs or devices with a limited amount of RAM. If your PC is really struggling to get memory, it could cause performance degradation.
This won’t be welcomed by people who want their Windows 10 installations to be as clean as possible, and the idea of sacrificing memory for a feature they rarely use won’t be too popular.
However, Microsoft has said that News and Interests are optional, so if you don’t find it useful, you can turn it off. Also, as we mentioned, this is an early version of the feature, and it’s likely Microsoft will refine it before its official release, which hopefully consumes less memory.
What may be more concerning is if this new feature hints at Microsoft’s future plans for Windows 10, where, once again, flashy performance-pumping additions are being added to the operating system, and which appear to be more about getting people to use Microsoft’s own services (News and Interests will use Bing by default) rather than actually improving the user experience.
