Anyone who uses incognito mode in Chrome, for example, will have noticed that dark mode isn’t as dark as it could be. There are various things that stick out like a sore thumb, in fact – but not for long.
If you’ve been disappointed that some screen elements remain stubbornly bright even when Dark Mode is on, Google is making a change that will put a smile on your face. A new setting will allow the interface for incognito mode to ignore an operating system’s lighting mode setting, as well as any other customization that might interfere with dark mode.
Prince of Darkness
There’s a reason Chrome treats incognito windows differently than normal windows – looking slightly different makes it easy to quickly differentiate between the two at a glance. But with the introduction of new experimental settings in the Canary versions of Chrome for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chrome OS, Google is giving users choice.
There are two flags to activate after the visit chrome: // flags in the browser. Search and activate Applies the UI in dark mode to the desktop to have Incognito mode ignore lighting mode settings and other interfering customizations. You can also activate the Enable Incognito brand consistency for the desktop flag to remove theme and background customizations.
For now, this is only available in Chrome Canary, but will eventually go to the major browser version and that will be the default settings.
