The first trailer for Last Night in Soho, the long-awaited new film from Hot Fuzz and Baby Driver director Edgar Wright, has finally been released.
The film, described as a psychological thriller but at the parcel like a horror film, is about a young fashion designer who manages to make her way through 1960s London. There she meets a singer who happens to be her idol (played by Anya Taylor-Joy of The Queen’s Gambit) – but something really is wrong with this version of the British capital, with the film’s synopsis stating that “ time seems to crumble ” regardless of that reality.
Watch the trailer below. You’ll only be able to see this one in theaters – it’s currently set to release on October 22, just before Halloween, after suffering two delays due to a pandemic.
Matt Smith of The Crown is also featured in this film, which was shot in 2019. As commentators have pointed out, it looks a lot like Edgar Wright’s version of Suspiria from 1977 – the lighting certainly suggests it’s a strong influence. Wright is a recognized fan of this film and even appeared in a trailer for the film in 2013.
It looks a lot different from Wright’s previous work, then – and we can’t wait to see what he comes up with.
Analysis: something new to bring us back to theaters
Hollywood finally appears to be moving forward with large worldwide releases starting next month, so there is no reason to assume that Last Night in Soho will be delayed again.
You can see why the film’s producers maintained a theatrical release for it, rather than moving it to a streaming service – Wright is clearly a firm believer in what theaters offer the viewer when it comes to a shared experience. The re-enactment of 1960s London in this film is stunning and best experienced on the big screen.
Baby Driver was a rare example of an original Hollywood film hitting the big screen and becoming a smash hit, a feat Wright has been able to repeat many times throughout his career. Hopefully this one will hit the same high notes.
