New Delhi . Indian woman star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has created history by winning a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Mirabai won a medal in the 49 kg category.

Mirabai Chanu ended India’s 21-year wait for a medal in the Olympic Games weightlifting event. Chanu won the silver medal by lifting a total of 202 kg from 115 kg in clean and jerk and 87 kg in snatch.

Earlier, Karnam Malleswari had won the country a bronze medal in weightlifting at the Sydney Olympics 2000. Hou Zhioui of China won the gold medal with a total of 210 kg (94 kg in snatch, 116 kg in clean and jerk). Indonesia’s Aisah Windi Kantika won the bronze medal by lifting a total of 194 kg.

Mirabai became the champion of Weightlifting Championship (48 kg) in 2017. He won the title in April this year by lifting 86 kg snatch and world record 119 kg weight. He won the bronze medal by lifting a total of 205 kg.

Chanu’s 2016 Rio Olympics was disappointing. But after that he continuously improved his game. He won the gold medal at the World Championships in 2017 and the Commonwealth in 2018.

26-year-old Chanu has improved a lot in his game since the last Olympics. He has improved his technique a lot. Chanu went to America on May 1 to do strength and conditioning training. He trained with his coach, Doctor Aaron Hersching. He also got his shoulder injury treated there. Mirabai arrived directly from America for the Japan Olympics.
