On December 18, when the UK’s most prestigious music award, the BRIT Awards, announced their nominees for 2022, the announcements had a special feature. Nominees are not segregated on the basis of gender in each category. Instead, the British chose to nominate the best artists, period.

This development came as a surprise and a caption to a decision the BRITs communicated at the end of November: it was changing the gender of its award categories. The move comes in the wake of comments by musician Sam Smith (who is a non-binary) and others that the binary “best male / best female” categories in award shows should be excluded.
