China’s 34th Golden Rooster Awards will be held on Thursday, December 30 in Xiamen, Fujian Province, China. At the ceremony, The Father, starring Anthony Hopkins, won the Best International Film award.
This is the first time an international film category has been nominated for a Golden Rooster Award. Five foreign films competed for the award, including The Father, Persistenton, Pinocchio, Wolfwalkers, and Happy Old Year.
According to a report by Variety, the father defeated the animated Wolfwalkers, World War II drama Persian Lessons, the Italian live-action Pinocchio, and the Thai drama Happy Old Year. In June, the film grossed $ 4.14 million in China, almost $ 2.12 million in the US.
Island Keeper, a patriotic film about a couple guarding a small Chinese island for more than 30 years, won the Best Feature Film Award. The film is based on the real-life story of a couple struggling to protect China’s coastline, marking the 100th anniversary of the ruling Communist Party’s ruling party. The title, associated with the 100th anniversary of 1921, won gold for best screenplay, the report said.
The father, played by Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Coleman, tells the story of a man who refuses all the help of his daughter when she grows old. As he tries to understand the changing circumstances, he begins to doubt his loved ones, his own mind, and even the structure of his reality.
Veteran Helmer Zhang Yimu received the most nominations for two films, Cliff Walkers and One Second. Best Director to Zhang Yimo, Best Actor to Zhang Yi, Best Cinematography. Zhang Yimo previously directed Best Directions for Not One Less in 1999, The Road Home in 2000 and Hero in 2003.
Zhang Xiaopi was nominated for Best Actress for her role as the mother in the Chinese hit film Hi, Mom, making it the third highest grossing film in 2021 globally after the American superhero film Spider-Man: No Way Home and Chinese War Movie.
