The ashes of the singing icon Lata Mangeshkar Immersed in Holy Ramkund on Thursday on the banks of the Godavari River in Maharashtra.
The singer’s sister Usha Mangeshkar, nephew Adinath Mangeshkar and other family members reached the spot around 10 am. Many Nashik residents gathered at Goda Ghat in the area to pay their respects to Queen Melody.
“She (Lata) was not my sister, she was my mother. All the ceremonies were held at an auspicious moment,” Usha Mangeshkar later told reporters.
Nashik Purohit Sangh President Satish Shukla officiated. Nashik Civic Commissioner Kailash Jadhav and some local politicians were present on the occasion.
Arrangements for the ceremony were made by the Municipal Council. A small platform and tent were set up in the place.
Heavy police security was in place in the area and vehicular traffic was banned for some time.
Lata Mangeshkar, 92, died at a Mumbai hospital on Sunday morning after sustaining multiple organ damage. The same evening she was buried with full official honors at Shivaji Park in Mumbai.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among those who paid their last respects to the musical symbol at Shivaji Park.
On Monday, three pots containing Lata Mangeshkar’s ashes were handed over to her brother and music director Hridayanath Mangeshkar’s son Adinath.
The 92-year-old tested positive for the corona virus with mild symptoms and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Breach Candy Hospital in South Mumbai on January 8. The Bharat Ratna recipient has been admitted for more than a month. She was removed from the ventilator as she began to show signs of improvement, however, on February 5 her health began to deteriorate, and on February 6 she succumbed to her injuries and was buried Sunday.
